The idea

Photography captures the moment as it is. Painting lets me shape it into what it felt like. Together they're two sides of the same way of seeing.

On the Easel

Zen Passage, from photo to paint

The photograph came first. Now it's becoming an oil painting, and I'm sharing each stage along the way.

About

Art waited patiently. Retirement gave it the front seat.

I'm Jerry Smith, a California photographer and painter. I'm drawn to places with character: open landscapes, quiet corners, weathered structures, and the way light turns an ordinary scene into something worth remembering. My photography and painting constantly inform each other. The camera sharpens my eye, and painting reminds me to slow down and really look.
